Abstracts of 2006 Hudson-Meng Research Proposals

Chadron State College/Barbara Hayford

Barbara proposes a study of the spring head and receiving reservoir at Hudson-Meng to determine community dynamics of macroinvertibrates with special emphasis on non-biting midges.

Chadron State College/Hannan LaGarry

Hannan proposes to develop a geochronological framework of quaternary sediments in the vicinity of the site by correlating and dating paleosols with archaeological features.

Chadron State College /Joyce Hardy

Joyce proposes to conduct a fine-scale plant community analysis of the Hudson-Meng riparian habitat and associated prairies and uplands and compare this information to two or three regional stream heads to determine if plant communities specific to the site attracted people there in the past.

Chadron State College/Mike Leite

Mike has two proposals:  1) continue work started last summer studying the physical sedimentological characteristics of the sediment that buried the bonebed; and 2) correlate and date paleosols visible near the site.

Chadron State College/Randy Lawson

Randy proposes to collect butterfly specimens over the course of the summer and provide a list of species and a display of butterflies seen at the site.

Chadron State College/Ron Weedon

The High Plains Herbarium has three proposals:  1) continue botanical field work in the vicinity of Hudson-Meng in order to complete a long-term floristic survey of the area; 2) ethnobotanical survey of the site; and 3) phytogeographic analysis of native plants in order to identify relict species.

University of Colorado at Boulder/Doug Bamforth

CU will host an archaeology field school.  Students will be involved in three activities:  1) excavation outside of the bonebed enclosure; 2) survey along drainages in the area; 3) test excavation at sites in the area.

Independent Researcher/Mark Muniz
Mark proposes to supervise and teach University of Colorado field school students and direct excavations outside (just south of the the bonebed enclosure) in order to collect data regarding human occupation around the bonebed as well as site formation processes related to the bonebed.

PaleoCultural Research Group/Stan Ahler
PCRG has three proposals:  1) size grading and sorting of data from their 2005 excavation at Hudson-Meng; 2) consult with Mark Muniz on 2006 data collection and future analysis; and 3) supervise Passport in Time volunteers as they sort waterscreen samples collected in the 1990s by Colorado State University.
